An assessment at SHU is a data gathering process to better understand the learning strengths and needs of your child. The types of assessments we undertake answers the questions you have. We conduct the following types of assessments for families and schools:
Academic: Shows how your child performs in reading, writing, math, and oral language relative to other students in their grades or age
Cognitive Profile: Provides an overview of your child's intellectual abilities, based on the CHC theory of cognitive abilities; an IQ score will be included for application to private schools or gifted programs
Psycho-Educational: Comprehensive assessment including academic and cognitive profiles
Bilingual Verbal Ability: Establishes the levels of language proficiency in Chinese and English
Executive Functions: Shows how well your child plans, initiates tasks, sustains attention, etc.
For schools: Initial, Triennial, and Independent Educational Evaluations
Process of Assessment
Contact us for a complimentary 30-minute consultation. This will help us understand your concerns and discuss what type of assessment can best address your needs.
A typical assessment may include:
Reviewing child's developmental and educational records
Interviews with the child, parents, and/or teachers
Observations in the school and/or home environments
Standardized tests with the child in a 1:1 setting
Rating scales to be completed by child, parents, and/or teachers
Duration of testing depends on several factors, for example, reason(s) for assessment, the child's age, testing stamina, social-emotional state, etc.
Academic and cognitive profile assessments typically takes 1-2 in-person sessions (~2-4 hours).
Full psycho-educational assessments typically take 4-6 in-person sessions (~8-12 hours).
After an assessment is completed, Dr. Ling will meet with the parents to review the findings. Parents will also be provided with a written report with recommendations.
We understand that you may want to take some time to process the results and recommendations. As an added service to you, we include a follow-up consultation 4 months after the conclusion of our assessment.
Cost: Due to the varied types of assessment available, please contact Dr. Ling for an estimate on cost.
